On the Complexity of CCG Parsing

چکیده
We study the parsing complexity of Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG) in the formalism of Vijay-Shanker and Weir (1994). As our main result, we prove that any parsing algorithm for this formalism will necessarily take exponential time when the size of the grammar, and not only the length of the input sentence, is included in the analysis. This result sets the formalism of Vijay-Shanker and Weir (1994) apart from weakly equivalent formalisms such as Tree-Adjoining Grammar (TAG), for which parsing can be performed in time polynomial in the combined size of grammar and input sentence. Our proof highlights important differences between the formalism of Vijay-Shanker and Weir (1994) and contemporary incarnations of CCG.

Statistical Parsing for CCG with Simple Generative Models
This paper presents a statistical parser for a wide-coverage Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG) derived from the Penn Treebank. The Treebank is translated to a corpus of canonical CCG derivations. We de ne a generative statistical model over CCG derivations and train it on the transformed Treebank. This model is evaluated using Parseval measures and the accuracy of recovery of word-word depen...
متن کاملA New Parsing Algorithm for Combinatory Categorial Grammar
We present a polynomial-time parsing algorithm for CCG, based on a new decomposition of derivations into small, shareable parts. Our algorithm has the same asymptotic complexity, O.n6/, as a previous algorithm by VijayShanker and Weir (1993), but is easier to understand, implement, and prove correct.
متن کاملFrontier Pruning for Shift-Reduce CCG Parsing
We apply the graph-structured stack (GSS) to shift-reduce parsing in a Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG) parser. This allows the shift-reduce parser to explore all possible parses in polynomial time without resorting to heuristics, such as beam search. The GSSbased shift-reduce parser is 34% slower than CKY in the finely-tuned C&C parser. We perform frontier pruning on the GSS, increasing th...
متن کاملA* CCG Parsing with a Supertag and Dependency Factored Model
We propose a new A* CCG parsing model in which the probability of a tree is decomposed into factors of CCG categories and its syntactic dependencies both defined on bi-directional LSTMs. Our factored model allows the precomputation of all probabilities and runs very efficiently, while modeling sentence structures explicitly via dependencies. Our model achieves the stateof-the-art results on Eng...
متن کاملIntegrated Supertagging and Parsing
Parsing is the task of assigning syntactic or semantic structure to a natural language sentence. This thesis focuses on syntactic parsing with Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG; Steedman 2000). CCG allows incremental processing, which is essential for speech recognition and some machine translation models, and it can build semantic structure in tandem with syntactic parsing. Supertagging solv...
